چکیده

ABSTRACT: Extreme swelling pressures (in excess of 5 MPa) were measured against the invert of a tunnel excavated by drill and blast method in a hard claystone containing variable proportions of anhydrite and gypsum dispersed in the clay matrix. When the invert was not present, floor heave reached displacements in excess of 60 cm in some cross sections. Displacements and pressures developed at a high rate (the maximum values mentioned were reached in a few months). Swelling was induced by gypsum crystallization in fissures and cracks. A crystallization model was included within the general purpose THM program CODE_BRIGHT. Discontinuities were simulated by means of an embedded discontinuity approach. Hydraulic characteristics of discontinuities change as their opening is modified, as a result of crystal growth induced strains. An evaporation front travels downwards and creates conditions for precipitation at increasing depths.). Calculated vertical swelling follows the patterns observed in the field by means of high precision extensometers.

Crystal Growth under Bridge Foundations

A high-speed railway viaduct experienced a sustained heave at high rates after its construction. The pillars of the bridge are founded on an Eocene hard anhydritic-gypsiferous claystone by means of massive foundations. Field investigations identified an active layer below the piles’ tips where expansions occur as a result of gypsum crystal growth in discontinuities from supersaturated aqueous s...

INVESTIGATING THE LINEAR EXPANSION, SET, AND STRENGTH BEHAVIORS OF THE BINARY MIXTURE PORTLAND CEMENT CLINKER-GYPSUM

Abstract: The linear expansion, early-age compressive strength and setting times of the binary mixtures of gypsum and Portland cement clinkers of relatively low C3A-contents were investigated. For this reason, type 1, 2, and 5 of Portland cement-clinkers were selected and a number of binary mixtures were designed. At relatively lower percentages of gypsum (about 5%), the early strength behavior...

Hydration modelling of Calcium Sulphates

The CEMHYD3D model has been extended at the University of Twente in last ten years. At present the cement hydration model is extended for the use of gypsum. Although gypsum was present in the model already, the model was not suitable for high contents of gypsum and did not include the transitions between the different calcium sulphate phases (anhydrite, hemihydrate and gypsum). Besides that gyp...

Gypsophile Chemistry Unveiled: Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy Provides New Insight into Plant Adaptations to Gypsum Soils

Gypsum soils are among the most restrictive and widespread substrates for plant life. Plants living on gypsum are classified as gypsophiles (exclusive to gypsum) and gypsovags (non-exclusive to gypsum). The former have been separated into wide and narrow gypsophiles, each with a putative different ecological strategy. Mechanisms displayed by gypsum plants to compete and survive on gypsum are st...
